Scam Amount: $10,000

JW gave David from PayPal the order number ID from the email she received. The email stated that she purchased gift cards and JW said that she did not make this purchase and wanted it cancelled. David gave instructions for the cancellation form by sending email through Zoho. It didn’t work. He connected through Google. She submitted the cancellation form.

She opened Chase Bank, but no refund appeared. We were transferred to the Banking Manager. “His name will be” Drake Watson. He said that the refund was in process. We were transferred back to David. JW was told to write down names and employee ID of David (ppl790) and Drake (ppl589) and transaction #wspc96489pc. Drake brought up “black screen portal of World Bank” (otherwise known as cmd screen). He said he would explain each and everything. Drake divided the refund into two parts, first payment $100.

While entering the amount, an error was made and the amount of refund was entered as $10,000. This was added to JW’s checking account. Drake made a fake call to his billing manager, Mr. Rogers. He explained the situation to non-existent Mr. Rogers, hoping JW was listening, but JW pretended to get a drink and didn’t hear. Drake had to explain again. As JW spoke over him, Drake started to get upset and told JW to “be a good listener ” along with some cursing and name calling in Hindi.

The call was transferred to Senior Banking Manager, Shawn, who also tried to explain each and everything about returning the money. He told JW to get herself ready and go to the bank, not to hang up. Shawn was on hold.

Road trip! Scammers were still on the computer and added screen connect. They attempted to sign up for Green Dot. They also attempted to buy cards on her Amazon account. Both attempts failed. JW told them she was in the blue car. Shawn now wanted her to go to Target. At Target, he told her to get gift cards; 2 of them for $500 each. JW wanted to know whose birthday it was.

After JW overtalks, Shawn said it was Drake’s birthday, so get cards for him. Drake is 27. JW went into the store and hung up on Shawn. Boop. Shawn called back while we were in the store. We booped again.

We ran a poll in chat as to whether we could get him to sing happy birthday. Chat voted that we would succeed at this.

When we were out of the store and back in the car, we called Shawn back. JW told him that she had the two giftcards. When JW insisted, Shawn added Drake to the call to sing him Happy Birthday before he got the numbers on the giftcards. After a couple of attempts, YES, he did it!! There were even some background singers and there was laughing at Shawn and Drake.

JW had to go back into the store because she couldn’t read the small numbers. She handed the phone to store clerk, Bob. Shawn pretended that JW was his Auntie and JW was saying he was PayPal, so Bob got angry at the scammer for trying to scam a nice lady.

Shawn: Give her the phone. (Hindi cussing)

We booped.

Shawn called back. JW explained that she knew what he was doing. We were transferred back to Drake. He told her to go to a different store. She was angry at him after she was being nice and got him presents on his birthday.

We booped.

Shawn called back and Bob answered. He asked if it was PayPal. Shawn said it wasn’t. Bob made fart noises into the phone.

We booped.
